The European Commission has introduced significant changes
to Schengen visa processing, paving the way for a digital era and a more secure
travel process.
The reform promises speedier, more convenient travel experiences for tourists as well as improved border security for member nations. Changes include simpler payment options and connectivity with EU systems.
Schengen visas are being converted to digital format,
complete with a 2D barcode issued by the Country Signing Certificate Authority.
The EU Visa Application Platform (EU VAP) will act as a common centre for visa
applications, removing the requirement for each member verification. The
software will intelligently assign applications to appropriate member states,
streamlining and shortening the process. Physical visits to embassies will be
required only in exceptional circumstances. Visa fees can now be paid directly
through an EU VAP-connected gateway, which ensures data protection.
Travellers can now apply for visas from any location with an
internet connection, lowering wait times and reducing the risk of fraud and
forgeries. The secure digital format also provides real-time application status
updates. Processing efficiency and automated routing lessen administrative
burdens. The strong digital format improves border control and connects with
other EU systems. Citizens from more than 60 countries, including Australia,
Canada, New Zealand, and the United States, must still apply for pre-travel
authorization through the ETIAS system by the middle of 2025.
