Canada Minister of Immigration,
Refugees, and Citizens, Marc Miller has announced a reduction in the number of foreign student visas by thirty-five per cent and limited graduate
student work permits.
The restriction aims to ensure that all students receive sufficient support for a successful experience while also stabilising the increasing number of international students.
As stated by the Minister
Approximately 360,000 study permits will be granted in 2024, a 35% drop from
2023. The stopgap cap will be removed in cooperation with
institutions, stakeholders, provinces, and territories to create a long-term,
viable framework. Current holders of study permits won't be impacted. A portion
of the funds will be given by the IRCC to each province and territory, which
will then be divided them among the approved educational institutions. Every study
visa application will need an attestation letter from the relevant province or
territory as of January 22, 2024. International students enrolled under
curriculum licensing arrangements will no longer be qualified for a
post-graduation work visa as of September 1, 2024.
“For 2024, the cap is expected to
result in approximately 364,000 approved study permits, a decrease of 35% from
2023.”
“It is unacceptable that some private
institutions have taken advantage of international students by operating
under-resourced campuses, lacking supports for students, and charging high
tuition fees – all the while significantly increasing their intake of
international students.”
“These measures are to ensure that as
future students arrive in Canada, they receive the quality of education that
they signed up for and the hope that they were provided in their home
countries,” he stated.
As of January 1, 2024, the financial
need for international students to pay their cost of living has doubled
from $10,000 to $20,000.
