Due to uncertainties, many international students in Canada
are asking for an 18-month extension of their work permits after graduation,
which expires this year.
They need to be qualified for the 18-month extension offered to individuals whose permits expire in 2023, despite the difficulties being faced in the labour market.
As a result of rising living expenses and employment losses,
around 3,000 2020 graduates are asking for an extension of their permits. There
are now questions about affordability as Canada has quadrupled the financial
requirements for entering students. Even in the face of calls from immigration
lawyers and conflicting messaging, the government sticks to its pre-pandemic
policy of allowing only one PGWP per student. More challenges arise from
Minister Marc Miller's proposal to cap the number of overseas students, which
has sparked allegations that it ignores these students' substantial
contributions to Canada's talent pool and economy.
Due to difficulties in the labour market, international
students in Canada have few alternatives for renewing their permits, requesting
additional work visas, or leaving the nation. Changes have been made by
Immigration and Refugee Canada (IRCC), which doubles the financial requirement
for entering students to cover their cost of living. The IRCC will not renew
the pandemic-era measures that permitted former students to apply for an
additional 18-month open work visa. However, they admit that these measures were
implemented. This is a reversion to the pre-pandemic policy, which allowed
people to only have one post-graduation work visa per person. Students whose work permits expire in 2024 are recommended to seek another qualifying
work permit.
