EU To Increase Schengen Visa Application Fees

The European Union's Commission has proposed a modification to Schengen visa fees, raising the cost for adults from €80 to €90 and for minors from €40 to €45.

The Union is considering raising the Schengen visa charge for countries that refuse to assist in the readmission of its citizens who lack the necessary paperwork. The suggested price is between €120 and €135 and between €160 and €180. In keeping with the amendment, the EU also proposes that third-party suppliers of Schengen visa services may request a higher application charge.

According to the proposal, third-party service providers that handle Schengen visa applications on behalf of member states may charge up to 50% more than the usual visa price, meaning that they might charge €45 rather than €40. The Commission suggests keeping the cost of a Schengen visa extension at €30. This change will not impact the cost of visas for nations that have previously established agreements on facilitation.

According to the EU Commission, “The revision of the visa fees does not affect the fees laid out in visa facilitation agreements unless the agreement’s provisions make explicit reference to the visa fees set out in the Visa Code.”

In December of last year, the European Commission met with experts from Schengen member states to examine a possible revision to the prices for visas. In light of the EU's rate of inflation and the requirement for a response by March 1, 2024, the Commission has launched an effort to encourage EU people to voice their thoughts on the planned increase in visa costs.
