Canada Caps Study Permit For International Students

In a bid to regulate the number of international students entering Canada, The Canadian Immigration Minister, Marc Miller has announced new details about the study permit for international students.

According to the Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the move revered as Unsustainable Growth in the international student program will see the initial 360,000 study permits reduced to 292,000. The minister has however declared that he has the authority to cap applications but does not have the right to issue visas, and the IRCC can only reduce the volume of application process and not the number of visas. The new regulations now share the number of permits by population across the country with provinces managing their own allocation.

In addition to the Letter Of Acceptance, international students coming to study in Canada will now be required to obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter(PAL) from their chosen province to apply for a study permit. This has become a major requirement in visa processing for students aiming to study in Canada and will take effect from March 31st 2024.
