Canada Introduces New Working System for International Students

The Canadian government is planning to introduce new working system for international student in the country. The new rule will enable foreign students in Canada to work off-campus 24 hours a week starting in the fall of 2024. This will necessitate new regulations, eligibility standards, and other recent adjustments to the country's international student program.

Immigration Minister Marc Miller oversaw the revisions to Canada's off-campus work regulations for foreign students, which aim to strike a balance between their requirements and the integrity of the nation's immigration system.

Canadian international students can now work up to 24 hours a week throughout the academic season beginning with the fall semester. This is a shift from the prior temporary policy that permitted students to work more than the regular 20-hour restriction.

International students can work off-campus up to 24 hours a week while enrolled in full-time classes starting in September 2024. This modification replaces a provisional rule that permitted limitless off-campus employment hours between October 2022 and April 2024. As long as they return to full-time study the following semester, students are free to work as many hours as they like during their breaks.

To be eligible for employment, international students who work off-campus during the academic year must meet certain requirements. These include having a valid study permit from Canada, enrolling in a full-time program, maintaining satisfactory academic standing, completing a six-month program that leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate, and having a valid Social Insurance Number.

According to Minister Miller, the 24-hour workweek limit is based on students' academic achievement because working more than 30 hours a week was the prior proposal that could have a detrimental effect on their grades.

The 24-hour shift corresponds with higher living expenses requirements for overseas applicants, who must additionally pay tuition and show that they are financially stable by accumulating a minimum of $20,635 in savings.

A new policy has been put in place by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to improve the integrity of the program for overseas students. For study permits, students must now obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province of their DLI. Furthermore, IRCC is putting in place a structure to recognize DLIs that have a track record of successfully assisting overseas students.

Canada has revised its off-campus job regulations for foreign students to maintain immigration integrity while supporting students' academic goals, protecting the immigration system, and guaranteeing beneficial contributions to Canada's academic environment.
