UK Immigration Numbers Swell: Work, Study, and Family Visas Contribute to Growth

The United Kingdom has witnessed a significant surge in immigration, driven by increases in work, study, and family visas. However, there has been a notable decline in Health and Care worker visas. The UK recorded a record-high net migration of 606,000 in 2022, surpassing previous records.

Work Visas

The number of work visas issued in 2022 reached 739,000, doubling the figure from 2021. The top industries driving this growth are technology, healthcare, and finance. However, Health and Care worker visas decreased by 20% compared to the previous year.

Health and Care Worker Visas

Despite the overall increase in work visas, Health and Care worker visas issued in 2022 declined. This decline is attributed to various factors, including:

Changes in immigration policies

Brexit-related uncertainties

Increased competition from other countries

Study Visas

571,000 study visas were issued in 2022, representing a 17% increase from 2021. Popular destinations for international students include London, Manchester, and Birmingham.

Family Visas

The UK issued 159,000 family visas in 2022, leading to a 22% increase from 2021. Reunification and spouse visas are the primary drivers of this growth.

Reasons Behind the Surge

Several factors contribute to this immigration boom:

Post-Brexit labour market shifts have created new opportunities.

The UK aims to attract global talent to fill skills gaps.

The education sector continues to grow, attracting international students.
