Australia's skilled migration program has introduced updates for tech and cybersecurity professionals, adding 10 new occupations to the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) as of May 2025. These occupations are now eligible for key skilled visa pathways.
Data analysts and data scientists can now apply for visas in data and analytics. Data analysts interpret complex data to drive decisions in the finance, healthcare, and AI sectors, while data scientists solve complex problems and predict trends using AI and big data techniques.
Cybersecurity professionals also have new opportunities. Cybersecurity engineers design systems to defend digital infrastructure against cyber threats, while cybersecurity analysts monitor and analyse security events to detect and counter threats. Other eligible cybersecurity occupations include cybersecurity architects, cybersecurity advisors, cybersecurity ops coordinators, cyber governance specialists, and penetration testers.
Software developers can also benefit from the updates, with DevOps engineers now eligible for visas. DevOps engineers enhance software deployment efficiency using cloud-native tools and automation.
There are several visa options available for these occupations. The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residency visa for skilled workers not sponsored by an employer, state, or territory. To qualify, applicants need to have an occupation listed on the CSOL, score a minimum of 65 points on the points test, obtain a positive skills assessment, and meet English language requirements.
The Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) is a temporary visa for skilled workers sponsored by an approved Australian employer. Applicants need a job offer, minimum English proficiency, matching skills and qualifications, and relevant work experience.
The Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) is a permanent residency visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer. Applicants require a positive skills assessment, relevant work experience, competent English, and an approved employer nomination.
