Nigeria and Canada have formalised a code-sharing agreement to enhance air travel and foster economic ties between the two nations. The agreement, signed by Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and witnessed by the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, in Abuja, will allow airlines from both countries to sell seats on each other's flights. This arrangement enables more diverse flight options and seamless passenger travel under a single airline code.
Minister Keyamo clarified that this is not a full Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) but a specific code-sharing arrangement, with plans to designate airlines from both sides to advance the partnership. He emphasised that this step would significantly strengthen the aeronautical relationship between Nigeria and Canada.
Canadian High Commissioner Salvaggio echoed these sentiments, highlighting that the agreement signifies stronger bilateral and commercial relations. He explained that code-sharing simplifies travel by allowing passengers to book journeys involving multiple airlines on a single ticket.
This agreement is expected to improve connectivity, offer passengers more travel choices, and promote economic collaboration between Nigeria and Canada. Local operators in both countries have reportedly shown strong interest in leveraging this initiative.
