Denmark Expands Job Opportunities and Fast-Track Work Visas for Skilled Professionals

Denmark has updated its Positive List to attract global talent by including high-demand occupations in healthcare, IT, engineering, and skilled trades. This update simplifies the visa process for foreign professionals, positioning Denmark as an attractive European immigration destination due to its efficient and transparent procedures.

New opportunities have been added across science and engineering, business and administration, and health and personal care.

Various available visa schemes are:

    • Positive List for Higher Education: This list targets professionals holding university degrees and advanced qualifications in the listed fields. The April 2025 update has significantly expanded this list, indicating a strong demand for highly educated specialists.
    • Positive List for Skilled Work: This list focuses on individuals with technical, vocational, or trade qualifications. The inclusion of a substantial number of skilled trade occupations underscores the importance of these professions in the Danish economy.

Beyond the Positive List: Other Visa Schemes:

While the Positive List offers a direct route for many, Denmark also provides alternative visa schemes to cater to different professional profiles:

  • Fast-track Scheme for Certified Employers: This scheme allows companies certified by the Danish Immigration Service to recruit qualified foreign nationals more quickly.
  • Pay Limit Scheme: Individuals who have secured a job offer with a salary exceeding a specified threshold (currently DKK 375,000 per year) may be eligible for a work permit under this scheme, even if their occupation is not on the Positive List.
  • Researcher Visa: This visa is specifically designed for academics and researchers with employment contracts at Danish research institutions or companies engaged in research and development.

As of April 2025, a significant update to the immigration regulations is the implementation of a new minimum salary requirement for most work permit categories. This threshold is set at DKK 375,000 (approximately €50,000) per year. This measure aims to ensure fair wages for foreign workers and align with Danish salary standards.

Denmark recognizes the importance of family unity and offers opportunities for the spouses/partners and children (under 18) of work permit holders to obtain residence permits and join them in Denmark. This family-friendly approach makes Denmark an attractive long-term destination for international professionals.

The April 2025 update to Denmark's Positive List, coupled with its various visa schemes and clear immigration procedures, underscores the country's proactive stance in attracting global talent to address its labour market needs. Potential applicants are encouraged to carefully review the updated Positive Lists and understand the specific requirements for each visa category to determine their eligibility.
