Updated English Language Requirements for UK Visa Applications Effective April 2025

The UK government has announced updated English Language Requirements for individuals applying for UK visas, set to take effect in April 2025. This update introduces new Secure English Language Test (SELT) formats under the provider LANGUAGECERT, while also reaffirming the ongoing validity of tests from other recognised providers, including Pearson, Trinity College London, the IELTS SELT Consortium, and PSI Services (UK) Ltd – Skills for English.

A significant aspect of this change involves LANGUAGECERT, where the previously available ESOL SELT 4-skills test, valid until December 31, 2024, has been replaced by two new test formats starting from January 1, 2025. These new formats are the LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT, likely intended for academic purposes such as university admissions requiring a visa, and the LANGUAGECERT General SELT, which is expected to be suitable for more general purposes related to various visa routes.

It is important to note that results from the older LANGUAGECERT ESOL SELT 4-skills test will remain valid for two years from the date the test was taken.

Furthermore, vouchers purchased for the ESOL SELT test will be valid for 12 months from their purchase date. The specific level of English language proficiency required, as well as the particular skills that need to be demonstrated (which could be all four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, or just speaking and listening), will continue to be determined by the specific UK visa category for which an individual is applying.

Therefore, applicants must ensure they take the correct type of SELT and achieve the necessary score as mandated for their chosen visa route. To ensure that their chosen test is accepted as valid, applicants must confirm that the test was taken at an officially approved test location, that the test is listed on the UK Home Office's official list of approved SELTs, and that the test was taken within the two years immediately preceding the date of their visa application.
