Federal Government Advocates Return of Direct Nigeria-Italy Flights

The Nigerian government is actively pursuing the reinstatement of direct flights between Nigeria and Italy, aiming to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations. This initiative is particularly significant given the substantial Nigerian diaspora residing in Italy, who have long advocated for more convenient travel options.

In recent developments, Neos Airline, a privately owned Italian carrier, has announced plans to commence direct flights between Lagos and Milan's Malpensa Airport. The service is set to begin with one weekly flight, to increase frequency to three times a week. Sky Master, the airline's Nigerian partner, will oversee operations within Nigeria. This move is expected to fill the void left by previous carriers and provide a more straightforward travel route for passengers.

The Federal Government has also approved United Nigeria Airlines to operate international flights to several destinations, including Rome, Italy. This approval aligns with existing Bilateral Air Services Agreements and is part of a broader strategy to enhance Nigeria's international aviation footprint.

The Italian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Stefano De Leo, also intends to launch direct flights between Italy and Nigeria. He emphasised that such a development would bolster economic relations and open up new opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.

These efforts collectively signify a renewed commitment to improving air connectivity between Nigeria and Italy, promising benefits for travellers, businesses, and the broader economies of both nations.
