Netherlands Introduces Self-Employed Residence Permit Eligibility Checker

Good news for global entrepreneurs! The Netherlands just launched its Self-Employed Residence Permit Eligibility Checker Tool for 2026 applications. If you dream of building a business in Europe, this tool is your first step. It instantly checks if you meet Dutch requirements to live and work as a self-employed professional. From tech to e-commerce, this is your chance to make ambition a reality and bring your family too!

What is the Self-Employed Residence Permit?

This permit allows non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals to reside in the Netherlands and establish their own business, work as freelancers, or serve as partners or directors in a company (including startups). It grants full legal rights to run your venture in the Netherlands, whether you're a developer, strategist, or consultant.

Who Can Apply?

Anyone outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland with a strong business idea or ready to freelance can apply. There are fast-track options available to US citizens, thanks to the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty, and to Japanese citizens, through the Dutch-Japanese Trade Agreement. If you are not from these countries, the Netherlands uses a points-based system. Score high, and you are in.

Eligibility for a Self-Employed Residence Permit

First, you need a strong business plan that meets a Dutch market need, is financially sound, and contributes to the Dutch economy. Second, your qualifications and experience matter; you will gain points for your education, relevant industry experience, and any prior success in self-employment. Third, you must prove financial independence, demonstrating you can support yourself and your family without public aid. This means having a minimum net income of €1,300/month as of 2025. Finally, you will undergo a points-based assessment, needing to score at least 90 out of 300 points based on your personal experience, business plan quality, and economic value.

Invite Your Family

This permit includes your family! You can bring your spouse or registered partner and children under 18. Even better, your partner can work freely without needing a separate permit. Imagine enjoying top-tier education, healthcare, and a high quality of life for your whole family.

Step-by-Step 2026 Application Process

Ready to apply? First, develop a winning business plan that includes market research, financials, and your unique selling point. Next, you will need to register your business at the KvK (Chamber of Commerce), for which you will require a Dutch address. Then, submit your application package online or via the Dutch Embassy. Be prepared to upload all necessary documents, including your passport, business plan, qualifications, financial projections, and KvK registration. Don't forget the application fee, which is €1,557 as of 2025. After submitting, you'll wait for a decision from the IND, which typically takes 90 to 120 days. Once approved, you can move to the Netherlands, pick up your residence card, register with your local municipality, get Dutch health insurance, and settle into your new life.
