The European Union Ambassadors have pleaded with the Government of Nigeria to review the restrictions it placed on European Airlines.
A passionate appeal was made on Friday 18 September by the European Union Ambassadors during a meeting with the Nigerian delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Godfrey Onyema, and the EU delegation, which includes three Ambassadors led by the EU Head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Ketil Karlsen.
Also in attendance were, Nigeria's Minister of Health, Dr. Osage Ehanire; Minister of State for Health, Dr. Olorunmibe Mamora; Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, and National Coordinator, Sani Aliyu.
Ketil Karlsen said at the meeting that “The availability of flights from Europe to Nigeria and vice versa is very essential. And that is why we have had this discussion today and we have appealed to our partners on Nigeria side to reconsider the possibility of having some of the larger carriers in from Europe flying with Nigeria again".
“Nigeria was never picked out, there was never a ban against flights coming from Nigeria to Europe. There was never, as I see a retaliation or reciprocity at play here".
“Nigeria is important to us and it would be wonderful to see this in Nigeria happening again."
Karlsen added that they are very hopeful that things will work out positively following the successful discussion.
Nigeria's Government had earlier restricted some major European Airlines like KLM, Air France, and Lufthansa from flying into the country ahead of the September 5 resumption of international flights, after Nigeria was excluded from the list of countries allowed into the European Union nations.
The meeting was described as being fruitful by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Godfrey Onyema, saying that Nigeria's decisions are reviewable.
