One of the world's breathtaking waterfalls and the most unique attraction in Africa is Victoria falls. The Falls is located on the Zambezi River and seats on the very border of Zambia and Zimbabwe which makes it possible to be viewed from the two different countries. It was discovered in 1855 by David Livingstone, a missionary from Europe.
Victoria Falls is an increasingly popular tourist destination with several fun facts that make it a unique attraction. Some of these fascinating facts will amaze and motivate you to visit the Falls.
It will interest you to note that Victoria Falls wouldn't have been in existence without the Zambezi river. Victoria Falls is part of the Zambezi’s 2,574 km long stretch and lie almost exactly halfway along the river, with the Zambezi, leaving the Falls and making its way east to flow into the Indian Ocean.
The water level varies throughout the year, it is at its peak in April, while the flow reduces from September to December, and the water levels drop. This gives room to the daredevils to swim to the very edge of Victoria Falls in a naturally formed pool and look down into the chasm below. The pool is made by a rock wall that halts the current enough for a swim. it is ominously named "Devil’s Pool".
Victoria Falls is the largest fall in the whole world and the only waterfall with a length of more than a kilometer and a height higher than one hundred meters. The noise of Victoria Falls can be heard from a distance of 40 kilometers, while the spray and mist from the falling water are rising to a height of over 400 meters and can be seen from a distance of 50 kilometers. No wonder that the local tribes used to call the waterfall Mosi-o-Tunya “The smoke that thunders”.
It is found in two national parks, Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park and Victoria Falls National Park. It is one of the world's seven natural wonders with several Gorges. It rains all day in the forest of Victoria Falls. Tourists must also be careful and listen to the instructions while visiting, as the region is a natural habitat of an abundance of wild animals.
