In order to test a new and efficient way of reducing the spread of the coronavirus, the management of the Helsinki Airpot, Finland has trained Dogs to detect the Covid-19 virus from passengers.
The dogs which were trained to detect the virus by sniffing passenger samples at the Helsinki Aiport have already begun work. Hopes are high that these dogs will provide the needed and efficient method of testing passengers.
For the trained dogs, detecting the virus is very simple and easy. According to the researchers, the results so far have been very encouraging as Lab scientists are yet to discover how to identify the virus days before the symptoms started, but dogs can smell the virus with 100 percent accuracy.
Ulla Lettijeff, an airport director who was one of the pioneers said, "as far as we know, no other airport has attempted to use canine scent detection on such a large scale against COVID-19".
"This might be an additional step forward on the way to overcome COVID-19". Ulla added.
To protect the dog handler from being infected, there are no direct contacts with the dogs during a test. The dog will perform its duty in a separate booth and those taking the test will wipe their skin with a test wipe and drop it inside a cup before giving it to the dog.
The passenger will be directed to a health information center located at the airport, in case the result comes out positive.
