China Sets To Introduce World's First In-Flight 5G

China Telecom and ZTE Technology are set to roll out the world's first in-flight 5G.

Both China Telecom and ZTE are well advanced in building out 5G-based air-to-ground (ATG) communication platforms for passenger carriers. China Telecom is running pilots on three national routes out of Beijing and is likely to offer commercial service later this year.

the head of ZTE's ATG (air-to-ground) product line, Liu Weiwei said last week that, at least two major national carriers are close to deployment. 5G ATG (air-to-ground) is likely to replace satellite communications systems for in-flight connectivity over continents, promising greater amount and lower dormancy at a lower cost. It uses a loyal global strong network to connect to a belly-mounted antenna on airplanes.

Each 5G ground tower has coverage of up to 300km, with fewer than 1,000 required to provide nationwide coverage across China, Liu says.

ZTE’s (Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment) newly released 5G ATG (Air to Ground) solution is also a world first, capable of supporting airplanes traveling at 1,200 kilometers for every hour. Liu says the solution includes the ground base station, core network, and flying CPE (Customer Premises Equipment), with the flying antenna to be delivered by a partner.

It was gathered that China Telecom has established a loyal subordinate, Tianyi Zhihang, that will activate its network if ATG (Air to Ground) solutions and flying equipment incorporate into the China Telecom cloud, It will run on both civil flight and telecom range, with up to 200Mbit/s in bandwidth for each airplane.

In the US, in-flight connectivity professional Gogo, just learned by Intelsat, is targeting to get its 5G service up and administration in 2022. This action in the civil flight upright again highlights the possibility for 5G to open up wide news sections.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has supplied a roadmap that puts 5G at the forefront of the flying industry, including both in-flight connectivity and industry logistics.

Last Friday, Zhang Ruiqing, deputy director of the Air Traffic Control Office, at a press conference, said, current connectivity was also slow and restricted. He further said the original main concern in the plan is to carry out improvements from LTE to 5G and to increase network coverage and performance. It also sees incorporation with new high-throughput satellites. Over the next few years the goal will be to construct a smart network organization that combines public and private uses and can support air traffic control, airports, and carriers, says Zhang Ruiqing, deputy director of the Air Traffic Control Officer.
