WHO Warns Against Vaccine Passports For International Travel

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned countries against demanding proof that travelers have vaccinated against coronavirus, as the Health Agency alerted that the use of vaccine visas for international travel would promote unequal access.

In accordance with the International Health Regulations, evidence of immunization against diseases such as yellow fever is required at some international borders currently.

Though there is evidence injection that breaks the cable of communication, the current inequality in supply makes such requirements one-sided and unethical says WHO.

A statement from the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee meeting released earlier this week says: “Do not require immunity of vaccination as a condition of entry, given the limited evidence about the performance of injections in reducing communication and determined injustice in the global vaccine distribution’’.

The group's approval comes as many countries are considering launching vaccine visas for travelers but also for other activities including sports.

“States Parties are strongly encouraged to acknowledge the potential for requirements of proof of vaccination to deepen inequities and promote differential freedom of movement,” the committee stated.

It added that "the States Parties are strongly encouraged to acknowledge the potential for requirements of proof of vaccination to deepen inequities and promote differential freedom of movement."

The committee concluded that the Covid-19 vaccine passports could be used in addition to a traditional passport, to travel to countries needing proof of vaccination before granting entry.
