South African Airways Sets To Return To The Sky

After one year of grounding, South African Airways(SAA) has received an operating license and the carrier is fully prepared to resume operations again.

All looks set for the embattled South African Airways to return to the skies as the carrier has been granted a new operating license by the South African Civil Aviation Authority(SACAA).

The management of SAA has not disclosed any resumption date but it was gathered that the company is fully set to recommence operations as soon as possible.

According to the SAA’s Interim CEO Thomas Kgokolo, “This is an important development as SAA prepares itself to take to the skies again in just a few weeks. While I acknowledge there is frustration over a delay in confirming this date, all of us at SAA need to make sure vital components in a very complicated and multi-faceted process are working seamlessly before we start. I’m confident that we will be able to make that announcement soon.”

The airline which has not made any profit for over a decade has been under bankruptcy since December 2019 and failed to get funds for planned reconstructing.

Like every other airline, SAA announced the suspension of flights in March 2020 due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic and was unable to come back in September as others did due to lack of funding.

After the South African government had confirmed and denied its intentions to fund the failing company for several reasons, a source close to SAA’s management confirmed that the funding has been approved, and the carrier will announce a date it will commence operations any time from now.
