Thousands Of Flights Canceled Over Omicron

Thousands of flights have been canceled during this Christmas break due to the increasing rate of the Omicron variant of  Covid-19. This has deprived many travelers of opportunities to visit their loved ones during this festive season as many passengers are stranded at various airports across the globe.

According to a source from one of the United States airports, "Chicago-based United on Thursday canceled 120 flights for Friday, 24 December, while Atlanta-based Delta said it had canceled about 90 flights."

FlightAware on Friday says, "United has now canceled 169 flights on Christmas Eve and Delta has canceled 127, along with another 50 canceled flights for United on Christmas and 89 for Delta."

"The current number of Christmas flights canceled globally is 2,029, with 448 canceled in the United States," says the flight-tracking firm.

United Airlines disclosed that “the nationwide spike in Omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operation. As a result, we’ve unfortunately had to cancel some flights and are notifying impacted customers in advance of them coming to the airport.”

"Pilots, flights attendants, and other staff have been calling in sick or having to quarantine after exposure to COVID-19, forcing Lufthansa, Delta, United Airlines, and many other airlines to cancel flights." Another source says.

The operators said that they were working to contact passengers, so there would not be more stranded passengers at the airports.

However, travelers have been advised to contact the airline or their booking agents to reconfirm their flight tickets before proceeding to the airport.
