Nigerian Airlines To Shut Down Over Fuel Crisis

The airline operators in Nigeria have threatened to shut down operations within the next 3 days if the current fuel crisis is not resolved.

This was made known by the CEO of Air Peace and vice president of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), Allen Onyema during a parliamentary briefing on Monday.

According to Onyema, "All the airlines in the country have only three days to fly before shutting down the operations."

"I have the mandate of all the airlines in the country to demand that airlines begin the importation of fuel."

If we can buy planes of millions of dollars, then we can also import fuel ourselves. Let the NNPC give airlines licenses, we want to start importing by ourselves." Onyema says.

“If we continue this way, the minimum ticket you will have is about N120,000. And the marketers have refused to tell us how much is the unit cost of their acquisition.” He added.

"If the price of the commodity cannot be reduced from the current N670 per liter, regulators should give the airlines license to import," Onyema stated.

The country has faced an unprecedented energy crisis for over a month since the importation of adulterated fuel and ever since then, the fuel price has been rising and the product has been very scarce.

At the end of the hearing, it was agreed by the airline operators and marketers that the price should be reduced from N670 to N500 per liter for the next three days, while they work on new price modalities.
