Italy Sets To Raise Migrant Work Permit Quotas For 2022

According to statistics, the number of migrants arriving in Italy for employment is projected to increase by roughly 5,000 people, as the Italian government has announced that no fewer than 75,000 migrants will be allowed to enter for work in the country in 2022.

Currently, Italy is struggling with a shortage of employees in key sectors, Italian Minister of Interior Luciana Lamorgese says.

According to Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Mozzaglia, the situation is linked to the conflict in Ukraine and the fear that a food shortage will result due to the number of migrants entering the country.

The Minister's statement is as follows: "Work is underway at the Cabinet to verify the possibility to speed up procedures since there is a lack of personnel in specific sectors."

Virginia Raggi, Italy's Deputy Prime Minister, stated that the Med5 conference will serve as a standard for the future EU Home Affairs Council meeting. She went on to say that Europe has demonstrated its ability to act in lockstep and express sympathy for refugees fleeing their homeland. On May 16, the Italian government and construction sector organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding to transfer roughly 3,000 migrants with international protection to Italy.

"Member states have been at the forefront of reception." In this new world order, in which the risk of a food crisis due to a naval blockade is not ruled out, today’s meeting was a benchmark," the Minister added.

According to the Italian Farmers' Association, Coldiretti, the Puglia region is experiencing a labor shortage. The association stated in a statement earlier this month that Italian agriculture requires at least 100,000 seasonal employees to ensure summer harvest fields. The tomato and cherry orchards have reported the most severe shortages.
