Spain: Foreign Students To Be Granted Stay After Graduation

The Spanish government has announced that legislation is being prepared to make it easier for university students from outside the European Union to stay in Spain for a limited period after graduation. Non-EU university students will no longer be required to renew their residence permits on an annual basis under the new rules.

Despite the lower tuition prices, many are hesitant to study in Spain because it takes a long time for their past qualifications to be verified. Another disadvantage is that once students finish their education, they are not guaranteed residency in Spain. Despite having higher tuition rates, the UK, US, and France manage to recruit a large number of students each year.

Joan Subirats, Spain's Minister of Universities, has indicated that legislation would be submitted to modify the restrictions that apply to students who seek to study abroad in Spain. By 2035, it is anticipated that Spain's higher education institutions will lose almost 20% of their students between the ages of 18 and 29 if existing standards are followed. To prevent this from happening, the authorities want to implement new rules, making Spain a more appealing destination for international students.

Furthermore, Subirats emphasized that Spanish authorities must find ways to preserve the talent they have developed "so that they can keep their residency status and look for a job for two years."

To stay in Spain, all graduates who are not EU citizens must apply for a residence permit extension.
