Regulatory Barriers Prevent Nigeria's National Carrier

Nigeria’s new national carrier’s plans may have experienced yet another setback as the stakeholders in the Nigerian aviation sector claim they no longer have any belief in the ambitions of the Federal Government. Others call it “unrealistic,” while others call it “wishful thinking.”

Despite the Minister of Aviation, Sen. HadiSirika,  saying the new national carrier would be launched in July 2022, Nigeria Air is still going through manual applications with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The Ministry of Aviation source gave out information that the upcoming airline has had numerous delays.

According to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and industry, no wet-leased aircraft have arrived in time for the launch of flight services for the new national airline. It was also doubted if the new airline could be launched this 2022. He stated, “We still have a very long way to go. We are going through the manual applications from the NCAA (National Airports Commission).”

“None of the three wet-leased aircraft has arrived for operations. However, I know the aircraft will come, but when they will arrive is what I don’t know. It’s still a long process.”

Grp.Capt.John Ojikutu (ret.) expressed concerns about the possibility of a new national carrier before May 29, 2023. He regretted that, despite the government’s excellent start to the plan in the final quarter of 2015, the enthusiasm for the new airline waned without taking a significant turn.

He claims that, with just a few months left until the current administration expires, none of the 95% local and foreign investors are known, and the government has yet to disclose the value of its 5% stake in Nigeria Air.
