Emirates Reduces Nigeria Service Over Trapped Revenue

The United Arab Emirates UAE national carrier, Emirates has announced its plans to reduce the number of flights operating to Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a memo written to the Federal Ministry of Aviation by The Emirates. The carrier stated that it will reduce the number of flights it operates from Dubai to Lagos from 11 to 7 by the middle of August. The Dubai-based carrier says that as of July 2022, $85 million of its funds is being trapped in Nigeria awaiting reparation.

In a letter dated July 22 and addressed to HadiSirika, the aviation minister, it stated, "We have no choice but to take this action to mitigate the continued losses Emirates is experiencing as a result of funds being blocked in Nigeria."

Emirates says money repatriation problems are affecting its capacity to conduct business in Nigeria and that efforts to address the issue have so far had only sporadic success. The biggest economy in Africa, Nigeria, is having difficulty producing its own oil as a result of pipeline theft and years of underinvestment. In 2016, a number of airlines cut back on their service, while Iberia and United Airlines completely stopped flying to Nigeria.
