The Nigerian House of Representatives has urged the foreign airlines operating in the country to splash airfares. This follows the response of the federal of Nigeria towards the lingering issue facing the aviation sector in the country by releasing the sum of $265M to the airlines as part of their trapped found in Nigeria.
According to the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji, who reacted to the Federal Government's decision to release the said fund says that the federal government has taken a good step by making more than half of the money available for the airlines.
Nnolim Nnaji frowned at the foreign airlines in the country for the high cost of the tickets and the sales of tickets in dollars. The reports have it that Nigerian travelers pay higher fares on international routes than any country in Africa. He however urged the airline operators to reduce their fares on Nigerian routes.
However, Nnaji exhorted the International Air
Transport Association (IATA) and the member airlines to express apprehension by
rescinding some of the actions that have been taken against the country.
In a statement, he said, “As representatives of the
Nigerian people, the House leadership and members of my Committee will continue
to dialogue with the executives to ensure a robust air transport economy in our
country “.
Nevertheless, Nnaji emphasized that adequate
arrangements should be available to avert such conditions in the future, while
the relevant organs of government were making efforts to liquidate the
