New Zealand Lifts COVID Restrictions

The New Zealand government has removed the majority of the remaining coronavirus-related restrictions.

According to Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, travelers will no longer need to be vaccinated to enter the country, and masks will no longer be necessary for supermarkets, buses, or planes. The COVID-19 traffic light system, employed during the pandemic, has been abandoned by the government. Masks are still required at medical institutions for individuals who test positive for the virus, and quarantine is seven days long.

"The changes we’ve made today are significant. They mark a milestone in our response, Ardern told The AP. This is a time when finally—rather than feeling COVID dictates what happens to us, our lives, and our futures—we take control back."

"This will be the first summer in three years when there won't be the question of What if?" Ardern stated.

While individual organizations and businesses are free to enact their own vaccine and mask policies, experts anticipate a decline in mask use once governmental limitations are lifted. As a result of the adjustments, according to Ardern, "enterprise activity, which is essential to the nation's economic recovery," will increase.

Following its reopening, Tourism New Zealand, the nation's official destination marketing organization, launched its first international campaign, "If You Seek," urging visitors from around the world to engage in transformational tourism.
