Ethiopian Airlines has announced the inclusion of Atlanta in its US destinations. Africa's largest carrier, says that the newly added flight will be operating directly from Addis Ababa to Atlanta.
According to reports, Ethiopian Airlines will commence a four-times-weekly service between Addis Ababa and Atlanta on May 16 using 315-seat Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Due to Addis Ababa's high elevation, which affects aircraft performance and range and makes non-stop flights to the US impractical, the plane will refuel in Dublin along the way but run non-stop from the US. The majority of its other US and Canadian routes use the same configuration.
Before the 2019
Coronavirus, Atlanta-Africa saw approximately 203,000 round-trip travelers. Turkish Airlines, Air France,
Qatar Airways, and KLM followed Delta in terms of passenger volume. Now Ethiopians are arriving. It was Atlanta's
fourth-largest African market, despite still being somewhat small. Because it
will be less competitive than alternative choices (via Addis and Dublin), a
two-stop outbound service will likely compete more on price.
Ethiopia's
passenger network in North America is still valid as of January 12 but is
subject to modification. Currently, Addis Ababa-JFK is served by Lomé; however,
starting in the spring, JFK will begin serving Abidjan instead. JFK passengers
can connect across West Africa with its ASKY partner.
