Schengen countries have started relaxing
visa requirements in order to meet high travel demand in 2023 summer. Schengen comprises about 26 countries of the European Union like Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Netherlands, etc. They allow people and goods to cross their borders of each country without passport control.
The caps on visa applications have been raised in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, and appointments for visas have been expanded in Switzerland. The COVID-19 pandemic hurt the travel sector globally, but there are now signs that it is beginning to rebound.
VFS Global, the organization that
facilitates visa applications, reports that a number of Schengen area countries
are easing Schengen visa requirements through significant policy changes in
order to keep up with the growing demand for travel.
There has been a rise in demand for
travel to established tourist destinations like the US, Europe, Switzerland,
France, Italy, the Netherlands, and the Nordic states. Because of its extensive
cultural history and breathtaking natural scenery, Thailand is also seeing an
increase in travel demand.
In order to accommodate the growing
demand for travel, Schengen countries are changing their visa policies. The
number of visa appointments available has doubled in Switzerland, while the
deadline for applying for visas has been extended from three to six months
before departure in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. This makes it possible for
travelers to plan their journeys far in advance.
According to VFS Global, the number of
visa applications has increased, with New Delhi alone expected to account for
roughly 80% of pre-pandemic levels in 2022. This pattern matches India's
overall growth, which in 2022 was likewise very near to 80% of pre-pandemic
levels. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant negative impact on the
travel industry, thus this regulatory adjustment is good.
Sen concludes, “We witnessed unprecedented
demand from India in 2022 which led to an extended peak outbound travel season
with steady volumes witnessed until December. We are confident that the
momentum will further grow, and hence it is advisable for applicants to apply
for their visas in advance to avoid last-minute surprises.”
