Schengen Visa Application To Be Digitalized By The EU

The European Union (EU) has announced its intentions to introduce a digital Schengen visa system, which will increase security and reduce travel time for travelers.

The plan to digitize the visa application process in Schengen nations was approved by the European Council. At the moment, travelers must go to a consulate to apply for a visa sticker, which can be time-consuming and subject to fraud and theft.

The new proposal would replace the current system of visa stickers with the ability to apply for a Schengen visa online. This online platform for applying for visas will cut down on the number of trips to the embassy and streamline the procedure for national governments. By being issued as a 2D barcode that is cryptographically signed and eliminating the possibility of counterfeit and stolen visa stickers, it will also completely eliminate these security threats. However, first-time applicants, those with invalid biometric data, and those with new travel documents must appear in person at the consulate.

Maria Malmer Stenergard, the Swedish Minister for Migration, stated, "On this platform, visa applicants will be able to introduce all relevant data, upload electronic copies of their travel and supporting documents, and pay their visa fees." They will also be notified of the decisions concerning their visa.

To accelerate processing and enhance security, the European Parliament approved a plan to digitize visa operations in the Schengen region in February. The plan intends to cut down on the expenses and "efforts" involved in applying for a visa.
