Delta Airlines has announced a reduction in its
regular service in the New York City and Washington, DC regions in the late
summer. This follows the Federal Aviation Administration's announcement that it
would grant airlines waivers for any slots they chose to voluntarily give up.
Delta Airlines is the newest airline to reduce its flights out of Washington, D.C., and New York City. The airline cut 2,006 flights from its schedule in August, which amounted to 183,901 seats and represented merely a 5.6% decrease from the week prior. The most significantly reduced flights, by around 37%, are those from LaGuardia Airport in New York City to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. During August, 77 flights in each direction between LaGuardia and Boston Logan International Airport will no longer operate.
In addition, Delta offers three daily flights from
DCA to New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, down from the
previously scheduled five. LaGuardia's flights to Atlanta (ATL), Bangor (BGR),
Charleston (CHS), Denver (DEN), Tampa (TPA), Detroit (DTW), Minneapolis (MSP),
Miami (MIA), West Palm Beach (PBI), Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), and JFK to Boston
(BOS) are among the other routes that will be reduced.
By August, Delta will add more flights to Newark, Salt Lake City, and Washington Dulles. On Delta's Airbus A321 aircraft, Salt Lake City will link to Newark twice daily, while Seattle and Washington will link twice daily on the Airbus A220-300s. For the first time in ten years, Delta will restart service between LaGuardia and Salt Lake City, with four flights planned for August.
