Ethiopian Airlines May Cease Operations To Nigeria - IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has disclosed that Ethiopian Airlines may soon terminate flights to Nigeria due to the airline's struggle with trapped ticket funds in Nigeria and other countries, which is impacting its global operations.

In an interview, Kamil Alawadhi, Vice President of IATA, warned that the country imposes hefty fees but fails to provide adequate services, which could lead to foreign airlines discontinuing operations in Nigeria.

"This situation will eventually reach a breaking point for Nigeria, where airlines will stop dropping off and not operating in Nigeria. This will then result in reducing their source of hard currency related to aviation, creating a vicious cycle,"
he stated.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of development and investment made by Ethiopian Airlines in Nigeria due to the country's hesitancy. He reiterated Ethiopia's commitment to support Nigerian airlines and develop a national carrier but also expressed anger with the frozen funding and lack of movement. He indicated that if the Nigerian government continues to engage with Ethiopian Airlines, they are ready to help the construction of the national carrier.
