Recent Visa Policy changes made by Europe and some popular countries

Regular European travellers now find applying for long-term, multiple-entry Schengen visas simple. The European Commission's new "cascade regime" permits holders of two valid Schengen visas during the last three years to apply for a long-term, multiple-entry visa. Depending on how long the passport is valid, the multi-entry visa can be utilized for two or five years.

New Zealand holders of work visas are not permitted to sponsor their dependents or family members. As of June 26, 2024, this new legislation will also impact those holding an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) at ANZECO skill levels 4 and 5 who do not have a citizenship route. As a result, dependents or family members of work visa holders must apply for their visas independently.

Australia has imposed additional restrictions on temporary visa holders seeking student visas, significantly raising the cost of applying for a student visa. The cost of an overseas student's student visa will increase to AUD 1,600 ($1,068) from July 1st, 2024, from AUD 710 ($473).

It is no longer possible for holders of temporary visas, such as visitors, temporary graduates, and maritime crew, to apply for student visas within Australia.  The minimum savings needed for a student visa has also been changed significantly, rising from AUD24,505 ($16,146) to AUD29,710 ($19,576).

Germany has announced the launch of the Opportunity card, which will take effect on June 1st, 2024, and let skilled non-EU citizens relocate and work for a year. For non-EU citizens to apply for this opportunity card, they must be proficient in German or English and have completed at least two years of vocational training or have a relevant degree. With the help of this new program, the German government will be able to draw in qualified workers from fields like engineering, IT, and healthcare.

Italy has introduced a new digital nomad visa, which allows remote workers to live and work in Italy for a year rather than the 90-day stay limit for tourists. Applications must be self-employed or remotely employed to be eligible for this type of visa. Highly qualified applicants who meet certain income requirements, have proof of housing, are considered for the visa, have a current health insurance policy, and have no recent legal convictions.
