United Arab Emirates Updates Guidelines for Expatriate, Sponsor Visas

Family members may be sponsored for a residency visa by employers and workers in the United Arab Emirates who have a valid work permit. Regardless of their job title, only foreign workers earning a minimum pay of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 with housing can apply for a residency visa for their families.

A valid visa or residency permit is required for expatriate residents who wish to sponsor family members to reside in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The age requirement for family members to be sponsored is 18 years old, and they must complete medical fitness tests at accredited UAE healthcare facilities.

The following are the main aspects of the revised sponsor residence visa: A resident sponsor must apply for his dependents' residence visa within 60 days of using entry permission to enter the UAE. In certain situations authorized by the ICP, a woman resident sponsor may sponsor her children. A resident sponsor may sponsor his parents, although the residence visa will be issued annually for the life of the sponsor's visa.

Medically unfit individuals will not be granted a residence visa; however, residents with dormant or inactive pulmonary tuberculosis may be considered medically fit and will receive a one-year Health Fitness Certificate for Residence. An expatriate professional is no longer a requirement to sponsor family visas.

To prove that they are married, an expatriate resident who wishes to sponsor their wife and children's UAE residence visa must present an authenticated marriage certificate in Arabic or one correctly translated into Arabic by an authorized translator. If a Muslim resident meets certain requirements set forth by the ICP, he may be able to sponsor two spouses in dire circumstances.

No matter how old they are, a foreign resident can only sponsor their daughter or daughters if they are single. When a newborn is born in the United Arab Emirates, they have 120 days to apply for a residency visa. If a foreign resident wishes to sponsor their stepchildren for a resident visa, they must meet the requirements of the GDRFA, which include providing an official no-objection certificate from the biological parents and a deposit for each child. The residency permits needed to sponsor stepchildren are renewed annually and have a one-year expiration date.
