Under New Zealand's new immigration rules, partners of international students can now easily obtain a work visa as of June 21, 2024. This new policy includes special procedures for dependent children's schooling and open work permits for spouses. This policy aimed to draw more international students to work in industries like engineering and nursing with a skills deficit.
Key bachelor's degrees and honours credentials that lead to the registration of specific occupations have been included in the New Zealand government's updated Green List, which identifies professions with skill shortages in the nation. Rather than New Zealand Qualifications Authorities (NZQA) qualifications, these jobs will require registration.
Spouses of eligible students may now apply for open work visas under the redesigned immigration policy. Without needing a pre-arranged job offer, the partners can work for any employer in New Zealand with an open work visa. Partners will be able to contribute their expertise and advance their careers in the nation as a result.
In line with the announcements made by Education New Zealand that over 69,000 international students enrolled for study in the nation, a positive trend for the education sector and local communities, Polly Vowels, the Manager of Immigration Policy at the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE), stated that the updated policy will hopefully attract more foreign students to New Zealand, especially those studying towards Green List Professions.
International students' dependent children between the ages of five and eighteen are not eligible for student visas, although their partners may be able to obtain a work visa. Nonetheless, they are eligible to enrol as domestic students in New Zealand and will be compensated for local fees. Enrolment procedures vary by institution and may need documentation of current visa status.
