Finland Expedites Work Visa Processing to Ease Labour Shortages

Finland has accelerated the processing of work-based residence permits to address labor shortages. The Finnish Immigration Service has reduced processing times for specialists, work permit applicants, and study permits.

Specialists' residence permits are now processed in nine days, down from 12 days in September 2023. This significant reduction in processing time is expected to attract more skilled professionals to Finland.

First-time work permit applicants can also expect a faster decision-making process. On average, they can expect a decision within 23 days. Study permits are also being processed more quickly, with decisions typically made within eight days.

Ilkka Haahtela, Director General of the Finnish Immigration Service, emphasized that faster processing times do not compromise national security. The authorities have intensified cooperation with other agencies to ensure thorough security checks.

By streamlining the work permit process, Finland aims to become a more attractive destination for skilled workers and students. The country's efficient migration management approach balances security and efficiency, attracting qualified foreign professionals and students.
