Germany Introduces Stricter Proof-of-Funds Requirements for Student Visas

Effective September 1, 2024, the German government has implemented updated regulations for student visa applications, requiring international students to demonstrate a higher amount of financial resources to support their living expenses while studying in Germany.

The new requirement mandates that applicants show access to €992 per month, totalling €11,904 per year, to cover their living costs, including accommodation, food, and other expenses.

This increase of 6% from the previous year's requirement aims to ensure that international students have sufficient financial resources to maintain themselves in Germany without relying on part-time jobs or public funds.

The updated amount reflects Germany's current cost of living and is comparable to other major study destinations like Australia, Canada, Ireland, and France. Students can submit certified documents detailing family income and assets, produce a bank guarantee, or use a blocked account to meet this requirement. A blocked account is a special bank account designed for international students. It allows them to deposit a specified amount of money, from which they can only withdraw up to a set monthly limit.

The updated proof-of-funds requirement applies to all new student visa applications submitted from September 1, 2024. International students planning to study in Germany should ensure they meet this new requirement to avoid any delays or complications in their visa application process. For more information, students can contact the German embassy in their home country or visit the Federal Foreign Office website.
