No less than 10,000 flights are set to be canceled from late October through March 2023, British Airways has announced. The airline says it would reduce its daily Heathrow service by an average of 12 roundtrip flights. The modifications will impact more than 1,200 flights in total by the end of October.
The action is intended to minimize disturbance over the winter, and the airline stated some long-haul flights will also be impacted. In addition to dealing with problems with its baggage handling system, Heathrow has struggled to handle growing passenger traffic.
“Following Heathrow's decision to
extend its passenger cap, we're making adjustments to our short-haul schedule
for the next two months. While the vast majority of our customers will travel
as planned and we're protecting key holiday destinations over half-term, we
will need to make some further cancellations up to the end of October,” the
airline stated.
“In addition, we're giving customers
traveling with us this winter notice of some adjustments to our schedule,
which will include consolidating some of our short-haul flights to destinations
with multiple services.”
Around 10,300 flights were canceled
by British Airways in July between the beginning of August and the end of
October. Earlier this month, the airline also put a two-week moratorium on
last-minute sales on short-haul flights out of Heathrow.
