The Beauty Of Nigerian Tourism: South-South

The South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria comprises six states: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Rivers State. This zone is also referred to as the Niger Delta region.

The South-South is made up of more than one ethnic group. Each ethnic groups in the South-South have their distinct language. Not only will you find various attractive sites in this part of the country, but you will also find a wide range of diverse cultures and carnivals.

Akwa Ibom state

This is one of the six states in the South-South of Nigeria. The major languages spoken are Ibibio, Eket, Iron, and Annang. The main attraction sites in this state include Ibom Plaza, the Oron museum, Ibeno Sand Beach, Mary Slessor House, and Memorial Tomb.

Bayelsa state

Bayelsa is a state filled with many historical relics and picturesque sites. Places like the Akassa Slave Transit Camp and Tunnel, Ox-bow Lake Resort are some of them. The major festivals celebrated in this state include the Ekpetiana Okelede(New Yam Festival), which signifies the end of harvest, and the Otuoke and Odemimon Festival. Izon, Ogbia, Epie-Atissa, and Nembe are the common languages in Bayelsa state.

Cross River state

Cross River state is home to the best scenery in Nigeria. More than half of the land is covered with tropical rain forest, making it one of the best biodiversity spots in the world. The main languages spoken are Efik and Ejagham. Every year, the people in the capital of Cross River celebrate the Calabar Carnival, which is usually with fun activities and colorful displays. It has been termed the biggest street party in Africa.

Delta state

Major attraction centers in Delta are River Ethiope, Otuogo Beach, Koko, Nana's Palace, and Abraka River Resort Motel. Traditional festivals are celebrated in every community. Popular Festivals include the Edjenu festival of the Agbarha Clan, Oki Masquerade of Torugbene, and the Ishe Festival in Ewulu Town.

Edo state

There are many tourist centers in this state, starting with the Oba's Palace to Ramat Park, Ise Lake, and Okomu National Eco-Tourism Park. The people of Edo celebrate more than a hundred festivals between March and September yearly.

Rivers state

Rivers is home to several cultures and several tourist attractions. Some popular sites include the Port-Harcourt Tourist Beach and the Yorwikskono Beach. There are over 23 languages spoken, but only two languages are dominant- Ijaw and Ikwerre.

Every few weeks before Christmas, a famous carnival termed CarniRiv is always celebrated in PortHarcourt Rivers State. The carnival lasts for seven days, and it is characterized by street parties, aquatic fiesta, colorful parades, beauty pageants, and several activities. This is a way Rivers people unwind and catch fun before the Christmas and New year celebrations.
